Celebrating the best of spring at Warrnambool Community Garden
Warrnambool Community Garden will throw open its gates for Spring Fling, a free, all ages celebration of growing, making, sharing, eating and connecting on Saturday 14 November from 10am to 2pm.
Spring is when the six acre space comes alive, and Spring Fling invites the whole community to see it at its most abundant.
Visitors can wander through the expansive garden, meet the chooks and worms, explore composting and the frog pond, and discover the projects and people that make the Garden such a valued community asset.
Families can enjoy kids’ activities and crafts with GreenPrint Projects, a hands on activity with Kelp Magazine, and the return of the ever popular gumboot throwing competition.
One Day Studio will bring an interactive arts and creative display, with plans underway for visitors to play musical instruments made using vegetables. Of Soil and Sea authors Kate Blenkiron and Jo O’Keefe will be there to launch their cookbook which celebrates the region's produce and producers.
A highlight of the day will be the official opening of the pocket forest in the top corner of the site and the unveiling of the new Japanese gates at the Miura Friendship Garden, constructed by Warrnambool Men’s Shed.
The gates follow the replanting of the ceremonial banksia earlier this year and the mini-forest adds another layer to the Garden’s growing collection of spaces to explore.
There will be live music throughout the day from local performers including Gus Franklin, Harpistry, Laura Bowman, Public Holiday and the Tin Shed Singers, along with a youth performer slot.
Plenty of delicious food will be available from the BBQ and bake sale, while plants, produce and preserves will be on sale for anyone keen to take a little of the Garden home. There will be a second hand jumble sale for those hunting for a bargain.
Across the day we’ll be running short, friendly talks on some of the things that make the garden tick.

Courtney Mathew, convenor at Warrnambool Community Garden, said Spring Fling is a chance for people to experience everything the Garden has to offer.
“Spring Fling is our big celebration of growing, making, sharing, eating and connecting,” Ms Mathew said.
“It is a free community event and everyone is welcome. Come along, bring the kids, grab a map and discover this wonderful space in the heart of Warrnambool.”
The Garden’s 2024 open day was recognised as Warrnambool City Council’s Community Event of the Year. This year’s event is shaping up to be even bigger, with more activities, new projects to explore and plenty of surprises.
