Gather Together: Stories from the Garden

For the first time, the Warrnambool Community Garden steps into the spotlight of the Warrnambool Storytelling Festival with a winter evening dedicated to the stories that grow among the beds, under the trees, and around the compost heap.

Pull up a chair, settle in, and feel the welcome embrace of community wrap warmly around us all as we share, connect and celebrate the things that bring us together.

On a winter’s night, gather in the cosy glow of Mozart Hall for an evening that honours how gardens grow, and how we grow with them. We invite you into the world of Warrnambool Community Garden through stories of soil, seasons, and the people who’ve weathered it all.

A garden, three generations, many stories

A lively panel featuring three generations of gardeners, a founding member, a dedicated volunteer, and a fresh face, will share insights into the garden’s history, its role in community life, and the transformations it’s fostered over nearly 20 years of shared love and labour. Expect honest reflections, laughter, and a few surprises from behind the compost heap.

From early days clearing land and laying paths, to building the Quarry amphitheatre, hosting open days, and now trialling pocket forests, the garden has been a living classroom and a meeting place for all ages. This storytelling night will trace that journey through the voices of those who’ve dug, planted, pruned and persisted.

From panel to open mic: your story belongs here

After a break for hearty garden-made soup, local bread, and mulled wine, the evening opens to a chorus of voices. Poets, storytellers, and songwriters are called to share their own memories and musings on growth, nature, and connection. Whether you’re a green thumb or just love a good story, come warm your heart and imagination with us.

If you’ve ever learned to save seed, watched a seedling push through cold soil, or found friendship while weeding, this is your invitation to speak, read, or sing a short piece inspired by the garden. Sign-ups for the open mic will be taken on the night.

Food, drink and supporting the garden

Please note that food and drinks are not included in the ticket price; however, purchases on the night are welcomed, with proceeds directly supporting the garden. The garden is a volunteer-run not-for-profit that supports sustainable food production, learning programs, and community connection across the region.

Event details and tickets

Come for the stories, stay for the soup, and leave with a deeper sense of how a garden can hold a community and how a community can keep a garden alive.
