Warrnambool Community Garden hosts first-ever spring seedling sale
Warrnambool’s community gardeners are celebrating the return of warmer weather with the garden’s first-ever spring seedling sale, offering hundreds of locally grown plants to help residents kick-start their spring and summer growing seasons.
The sale will be held on Saturday 24 October from 10am to 12pm or until sold out at the Warrnambool Community Garden, on the corner of Grieve and Derby Street.
Organisers say hundreds of seedlings will be available, including spring and summer favourites such as tomatoes, zucchini, cucumbers and pumpkins, plus herbs, flowers and native species.
Many varieties have been selected for flavour, resilience and long-season production, with both common and more unusual options on offer.
Adele Kenneally, a committee member with the garden, said the event has been a great experiment in collaboration and coordination.
“It’s been a fun challenge for volunteers to start these seeds and take care of them over the last few months. While it hasn’t all been smooth sailing, they are looking healthy and strong, ready for their new homes,” Ms Kenneally said.
“The varieties we've chosen are well suited for this area, and many are heirloom varieties you simply can't buy at nurseries or hardware stores."
Ms Kenneally said the garden’s “Plotters” team has been busy propagating seedlings in preparation for the sale, which aims to both support the garden’s ongoing work with the funds raised and strengthen local connections around food growing and sustainability.
To help the event run smoothly, organisers are asking attendees to arrive early, as popular varieties are expected to sell quickly, bring a bag or box to carry seedlings home and cash for faster checkout with EFTPOS also available.
