If you’re looking for a relaxed, welcoming way to connect with your community, learn new skills, and enjoy the outdoors... volunteering at the garden is a perfect fit.
Our working bees held on the first and third Saturday of each month, from 9am to 12:30pm. Drop in anytime during the morning, but if you sign on before 10:30am, you’ll be counted in for a free lunch - usually a tasty BBQ with fresh sides from the garden. No membership is needed to join in, so feel free to bring a friend along and introduce them to the garden community.
Join in Saturdays for 2025 on:
February 1st & 15th
March 1st & 15th
April 5th
May 3rd & 17th
June 7th & 21st
July: 5th & 19th
August: 2nd & 16th
September: 6th
October: 4th & 18th
November: 1st & 15th
December: 6th & 20th
If these days don't suit, we are happy to accommodate. We have activities on Tuesday morning, Wednesday and Friday morning as well, or can discuss other times.
What can you do?
The garden is a hive of activity, and there’s a wide variety of tasks to suit all interests and abilities. Here are some ways you might get involved:
Gardening: Planting, weeding, harvesting, watering, mulching, turning compost, and caring for fruit trees.
Propagation: Growing plants from seeds, cuttings, and divisions.
Heavy gardening: Mowing lawns, using tractors and line trimmers, site maintenance, and carpentry.
Native plants: Working with bush foods, ornamentals, revegetation, and propagation.
Animal care: Looking after the chooks.
Building maintenance: Repairs and general upkeep inside and out.
Cooking: Preparing lunches for working bees or making preserves.
Administration: Helping with records, finances, and grant applications.
Creative roles: Photography, social media content, and website updates.
Programs and events: Assisting with children’s Sprouts Club, school tours, workshops, or helping organise and run community events.
Member support: Mentoring new or less able gardeners.
Whatever your skills or interests, there’s something to match, and you’ll be supported by experienced garden leaders to get started.
Why volunteer here?
Volunteering at Warrnambool Community Garden is more than just gardening. It’s about connecting with people, sharing knowledge, and being part of a vibrant, diverse community. Many volunteers find it a great way to improve their physical and mental wellbeing while learning practical skills. Plus, it’s a lot of fun!
You don’t need to commit long-term, many people come for one-off days or short series of volunteering. Others find they love it so much they become members and get even more involved.
How to get started
Just come along to a working bee, say hello to whoever you meet first, and they’ll introduce you to a garden leader who can show you around and find the best way for you to help. If you want to chat beforehand or find out more, you can contact us directly.
Volunteering is a wonderful way to get outside, meet new people, and give back to your community - all while helping grow fresh, healthy food and a greener future.
