Bee-ginners: basics of bee boxes, cleaning and caring for your hives

Langstroth? Flow hive? 8-frame vs 10? How do you know which hive to chose and how do you maintain them? Join this hands-on session and find out!

Time & Location

21 Mar 2026, 10:00 am – 12:00 pm

Warrnambool Community Garden, 2 Grieve St, Warrnambool VIC 3280, Australia

About the event

Join us for a practical, hands-on session where you’ll learn how to take care of your bee boxes and frames. Our beekeepers will demonstrate the basics of cleaning and refurbishing equipment, assembling and wiring frames, sanding and repainting boxes, and showing how to reuse old frames safely.

Keeping your hives clean is one of the most important parts of good beekeeping. Regular cleaning helps prevent the build-up of wax, debris, and most importantly, bacteria, mould, and pests that can cause problems for the health of your bees.

We will go over the different styles of boxes, pros and cons of each type including where you can source them from.

You’ll also learn what to look out for when inspecting hive health and get tips for choosing hive parts that suit your setup. This will be a great opportunity to chat with other beekeepers and contribute to the garden’s growing apiary.
